Women appeared to have gained ground in the political arena with 22 being fielded as candidates in the 11th Sarawak state election, compared to 16 in 2011.
Barisan Nasional candidate for Samariang, Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the scenario reflected growing confidence in women's capability as political leaders.
"Women should rightly be given opportunity to show their leadership potential and skills, and ability to contribute not only to their respective party and constituency but also society and state as a whole," she told Bernama.
She is defending the seat against another woman candidate, Nani Sahari from Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) and PAS' Yusof Assidiqqi Ahmad Sharkawi.
However, Sharifah Hasidah, from PBB, does not see her two opponents as a real threat in her bid come May 7 to retain the seat.
"Half of the voters in my constituency are women, who are loyal to the party, and play a significant role through it," she said.
