Sarawak polls: I did not dictate to EC officers on date of state election - Adenan Satem

"I also did not dictate to them what they ought to do when the state legislative assembly is dissolved.

"The EC people know what they should do as election matters is their prerogative. I hope this clarifies everything.

"There is no need for me to tell them (what to do)," he told a media conference here after attending the 44th National-level RELA Anniversary celebration at the Sibu Town Square 2 here today.

He was responding to criticisms and insinuations that he had done so from some opposition politicians.

Last night when launching an election seminar for the Satok state constituency in Damai in Kuching, Adenan said he had met with the EC and had proposed that the state election's nomination day be April 18 and polling on April 30.

On the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly, he said he would seek an audience with the Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri on a date to be fixed.

Meanwhile, Adenan said state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen had an inflated ego.

He said this in alluding to Chong's statement today that he had chosen April as the date for the polls in order to coincide with the culmination of his (Chong's) Bersih 4 trial.

Chong, who is also Kuching MP, is jointly charged with Stampin MP Julian Tan( also from the DAP) under Section A(2)(c) of the Peaceful Assembly Act for taking part in a street rally on August 28 last year on their way to join a Bersih 4 gathering at a sports field here.

If convicted, he is liable to a maximun fine of RM10,000, which will also disqualify him from contesting in any election for five years.

"Chong has indeed an inflated view of himself. He thinks he is that important for his presence to determine the date (of the election). What I am doing has nothing to do with his trial," Adenan said.
