Selangor UMNO call for 'long overdue' redelineation of electoral boundaries

Pandan Umno Division chief Datuk Mohd Haniff Koslan said several parliamentary constituencies in Selangor had more than 100,000 voters.

"The number of voters is rising. It is not good for a parliamentary constituency to have hundreds of thousands of voters. We can divide these constituencies into two or three. There are also constituencies which have less than 30,000 voters.

"If the number of voters is too large, it will pose a burden for the elected representative in discharging his duties well," he told Bernama.

The last redelineation exercise was carried out in 2003 and the next should have been undertaken in 2011 but was deferred in view of the 13th general election, which was held last year.

The parliamentary constituencies in Selangor which had more than 100,000 voters during the 13th general election were Gombak (with 123,290); Selayang (105,895); Hulu Langat (127,347); Serdang (133,139); Subang (128,543) and Kapar (144,159).

Meanwhile, Ampang Umno Division chief Datuk Ismail Kijo said some parliamentary constituencies did not undergo a redelineation in 2003 despite having more than 90,000 voters.

Citing Gombak as an example, he said the number of voters in that constituency had now exceeded 123,000.

"The population in every parliamentary constituency has been rising. The last redelineation exercise was in 2003. It is now 2014. Just imagine," he said.
