Setting up a new party as proposed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will only disrupt the country's peace, said Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim.
He said the new party would be more detrimental to Malaysia as Dr Mahathir was set on toppling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
"I worry that the country will be in turmoil because the opposition will make use of anyone to make sure that they topple BN, in fact it has been proven that the opposition pact is fragile and they are not united," he told Bernama after appearing as a guest on Bernama Radio's programme 'Langit Biru' at Wisma Bernama, here Tuesday.
He was commenting on the announcement by Dr Mahathir recently to set up a new party and joining the opposition pact with DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).
Irmohizam said the people of Malaysia must have a high level of patriotism and not be influenced by anyone who wanted to jeopardise racial unity and the country's peace.
"We should take note of what happened in Turkey when the people rose against the coup attempt by the army and supported President Recep Tayyip Erdogan...this clearly proves the patriotism among the Turkish people is high," he said.
