Wanita UMNO chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has denied that the Kuala Kangsar division Wanita UMNO was sulking and not cooperating in Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid's by-election campaign.
"The claim is shameful. If there are those who say that the Kuala Kangsar Wanita UMNO machinery is sulking, I want to prove them wrong as at the programme today, the Kuala Kangsar Wanita UMNO chief (Aishah Halid) was with us.
"In fact, the Wanita machinery is part of the BN machinery in Kuala Kangsar. We, including Perak Wanita UMNO, give our undivided support to the candidate."
She told this to reporters when attending the Duha/Hajat Prayer Programme and Premier Tadarus (group reading of the Quran) organised by UMNO Wanita at Ridzuaniah Mosque, here, with Aishah also present.
Shahrizat's statement was supported by Aishah who said the claim was a lie.
"Upholding the trust of Kuala Kangsar UMNO Wanita members, I wish to clarify that the claim is slanderous. All works for the campaign are proceeding well. The members and I have gone down to the district polling centres and to date, everything is running smoothly," she said.
Prior to this, there were allegations that Kuala Kangsar Wanita UMNO was sulking because none of the candidates listed for the by-election, including Aishah, were picked.
Meanwhile, Shahrizat said in deference to the month of Ramadan, the Wanita UMNO machinery campaigned in an orderly and civilised manner, and focused on informing voters concerning the advantages of BN candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid in continuing the struggle of the late incumbent MP for Kuala Kangsar.
On the statement of independent candidate, Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, who questioned the fielding of a woman candidate in the Kuala Kangsar by-election, Shahrizat said the opinion was behind time and shallow.
"I pity the individual who made such a statement. Why can't a woman be a candidate. In Islam, a woman has a very high and honourable place," she said.
At the event, Shahrizat also handed out constributions to more than 100 orphans in the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary constituency, for Aidilfitri.
She then visited the Kuala Kangsar by-election media centre.
Polling in the by-election is on June 18, which will see a four-cornered fight involving BN, PAS, Parti Amanah Negara and an independent.
