A total of 24,050 voters or 40.13 per cent of the 59,927 voters have exercised their right in the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election as at noon today.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said he was satisfied with the by-election process which was going smoothly.

So far, many of those who had come out to vote were the old folks, he told a media conference here today.

He expected the voters turnout for the by-election to be at least 70 percent.

Meanwhile, Perak police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said a commotion broke out at the polling centres at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bahagia and Sekolah Kebangsaan Ayer Hitam due to provocations by canvassers from contesting parties.

However, he said the police were able to control the situation.

Teluk Intan has 60,349 voters, comprising Chinese (25,310), Malay (23,301), Indian (11,468) and the remaining, from other ethnic background.

The total include 410 early voters, where 392 of them or 95.61 percent cast their vote last May 27.

The by-election for the Teluk Intan parliamentary constituency is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong and DAP's Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.

It is held following the death of incumbent Seah Leong Peng, 48 from DAP who died after a long battle with cancer on May 1.

In the last May 2013 General Election, Seah who was involved in a three-cornered fight, beat two other candidates by a 7,313-vote majority.
