Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have issued a joint statement rejecting the National Security Council (NSC) Act.
The four paragraph statement signed by both former prime minister and his deputy among others claimed that the Act threatens the country's democratic system.
“The Act clearly puts aside the powers of the Yang Dipertuan Agong and the Council of Malay Rulers in the issue of national security and people's freedom,” said the statement.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad made a shocking visit to the Kuala Lumpur High Court on September 5, to lend a moral support Anwar, who filed an injunction to suspend the coming into force of the NSC Act.
Both the leaders were seen shaking hands inside the court room.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said this was the first meeting between the two former UMNO leaders after 18 years, three days.
