KUALA LUMPUR:The UMNO General Assembly on Jan 31 will discuss a motion on severing ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) going into the 15th general election (GE15), said UMNO information chief Shahril Hamdan.

The motion also calls for consolidating cooperation with Pas, he said in a statement issued after the UMNO Supreme Council meeting here last night.

Shahril said this was to enable the motion to be debated and decided at the highest level of the party according to the UMNO constitution.

The Supreme Council meeting scrutinised all the motions raised by 189 divisions at their delegates meetings over the weekend, he said.

“Among the main motions raised by the majority of UMNO divisions is to maintain cooperation with Pas through Muafakat Nasional by taking into consideration the sentiment of consensus built up in our 22 months together as the opposition,” he added.

Apart from this, the division delegates meetings also resolved to push for GE15 to be held before the end of the first quarter of 2021, subject to the COVID-19 situation, to return the mandate to the people, he said.

He said these motions also touched on policy matters and basic approaches which would have a major impact on the party's future.

On the appointment of Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan as the new Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, he said it had been agreed to verbally by BN component parties and would be confirmed at the BN Supreme Council meeting soon.

He said the UMNO Supreme Council meeting also decided to strengthen the party machinery at the state level to help flood victims.

“The Sayang Wanita UMNO and Sabil Pemuda UMNO Squads have been mobilised and a special UMNO team on disaster management has been formed to coordinate the delivery of aid to flood victims,” he said.
