DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang today sent an open appeal to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to drop the money laundering charge against his daughter-in-law, Betty Chew.
Kit Siang who sent an open appeal to the media also asked the same thing to be done by the Attorney General, Tan Sri Idrus Harun and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Through the email, Kit Siang, who has known Betty for the past three decades, also questioned why there was an attempt to equate his daughter-in-law with Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
"I have known Betty for three decades. Look in her home and you will not find, for example, 12,000 jewellery consisting of 2,200 rings, 1,400 necklaces, 2,100 bracelets, 2,800 pairs of earrings, 1,600 brooches, 14 tiaras or 423 watches of luxury brand (Rolex, Chopard and Richard Mille), 234 luxury sunglasses (branded Versace and Cartier), 567 luxury handbags from 72 brands (including Chanel, Prada, Versace, Bijan, KWANPEN and Judith Leiber), 272 handbags from Hermès (Birkin bag) or cash amounting to RM116.7 million in 26 different currencies," the media statement said.
The statement issued by him was seen as referring to the raid and seizure of luxury goods carried out by the police in 2018 at the executive residential unit in Bukit Bintang involving Rosmah, wife of former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He declined to comment further on the case and handed over the matter to a lawyer to defend his daughter-in-law.
Betty will reportedly be indicted in Butterworth Sessions Court on Tuesday under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Illegal Activities (AMLA) Act.
