2017 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia to become first 'Green Games'

Malaysia as the host will take the initiative to adopt the green games concept to promote environmental awareness and healthy lifestyle.
The 2017 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia will become the first edition to adopt the 'Green Games' concept, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar.
Khairy said Malaysia as the host would take the initiative to adopt the green concept to promote environmental awareness and healthy lifestyle.
He said a number of steps had gone into the planning of the concept with the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, including setting up recycle bins at competition venues, better energy management and ensuring the sales of food with minimal use of plastics.
"Apart from encouraging generation to be involved in sports, we would also like to teach them about preserving the environment and enhance awareness among the people," he said after closing the 'Pre Conference: Youth and Environment' by the Pan-Pacific & South East Asia Women's Association (PPSEAWA), here Monday.
Earlier in his speech, Khairy said solid waste management and policies on are benchmarks for the development of a country.
"The progress and development of a country is not measured by the high rise buildings or infrastructure availableif we have first class , then we will continue to be a third world country," said Khairy.
In Kuala Lumpur alone, solid waste accounts for a whopping 2,500 metric tonnes a day, he said.
