HANOI: The national compound archery squad are on the right track to achieving their two-gold target in the 31st SEA Games after an in-form Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki fired his way into three finals - men's individual, men's and mixed team - at the National Sports Training Centre, Nhon Town yesterday.
In men's individual, the experienced Mohd Juwaidi defeated Myanmar's Zin Thu Rain Mhu 144-139 in the 1/4 round and compatriot Alang Ariff Aqil Mohd Ghazali 140-144 in the 1/2 round.
The 31-year-old is set to face Thailand's Sirapop Chainak in the final on Thursday (May 19), while Alang will face Vietnam's Nguyen Van Day for the bronze medal.
Mohd Juwaidi then led the men's team, also comprising Alang and Wong Co Wan, to eliminate the Filipino trio of Andrei Olano, Florante Matan and Paul De La Cruz 234-228 to set up a title showdown against Indonesia's trio of Adika Hastian, Pratama Hendika Putra and Wisnu Wardhana Prima.
In the mixed team event, Mohd Juwaidi partnered Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh to oust Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Hai Chau-Tran Trung Hieu 154-152 in the last four to set up a final date with Paul De La Cruz-Jennifer Dy Chan of the Philippines.
Mohd Juwaidi hopes to continue his fine form in the finals and bag all three gold medals on Thursday.
"I also want to finally lay my hands on the gold medal in the individual event as I've only won silver (KL 2017) and bronze (2015 Singapore).
"The weather condition here is quite challenging too. We need to quickly adapt to the conditions. I feel that my experience and maturity have helped the team come this far," he told reporters.
Since making his debut in the 2013 Myanmar Games, Mohd Juwaidi has won a total of five golds, two silvers and one bronze.
Meanwhile, in the women's individual event, Fatin lost 128-140 to Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Hai Chau in the 1/4 round while debutant P. Kayalvhily went down 136-137 to Singapore's Contessa Loh in the round of 1/8.
The women's national team of Fatin, Kayalvhily and Iman Aisyah Norazam missed out on the final after losing 219-225 to Vietnam's Ngoc Anh Le Pham, Phuong Thao Le and Hai Chau in the 1/2 round and will square off with Andrea Lucia Robles, Jennifer Chan and Rachelle Anne Cabral of the Philippines for the bronze medal.
