KUALA LUMPUR: There was no double joy for Malaysia in the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) 2022 in Manila, Philippines today.
While national men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia triumphed, top national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik continued to play the bridesmaid's role on the international stage.
In the men's singles final, Zii Jia needed 45 minutes to tame Indonesian Jonatan Christie 21-17, 23-21 at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex.
There was no such luck, however, for 2019 SEA Games champions Aaron-Wooi Yik when they fell 21-23, 10-21 to Indonesians Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan in 52 minutes in the men's doubles title showdown.
The result sees Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were paired up in 2017, emerging as runners-up for the seventh time, including at the All England 2019 and Thailand Open 2020.
Meanwhile, Zii Jia described the victory as being very meaningful to him since he turned professional.
"He (Jonatan) is a tough opponent but the strategy in this game was (for me) to remain focused.
"It means a lot to me after I became a professional player, so this is the start of my journey. Hopefully, (there's) more to come," he said in a video clip shared with the media today.
