Chong Wei and two pairs in quarters

World number one men's shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei continued his remarkable performance in the All-England Badminton Championship after he sailed through to the quarter-finals at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, United Kingdom, yesterday.

Chong Wei who is gunning for a hat-trick in the championship after winning back-to-bak in 2010 and 2011 easily dispatched off his opponent, Wang Zhengming of China; 21-17 and 21-19 in just 42 minutes in the second round match.

In the quarter-finals, the 31-year-old Penangite will play either Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam or Verma Sourabh of India who will square-off in the second round match, later today.

National men's pair, Hoon Thien How and Tan Wee Kiong followed in Chong Wei's footsteps after they defeated Ingo Kindervater and Gerjohannes Schoettler of Germany; 21-15 and 21-15.

They, however, have an uphill task as they will play against eight seeded Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the quarter-finals as the Indonesian pair defeated Chinese Taipei's, Lee Sheng Mu and Tsai Chia Hsin; 23-21 and 21-16.

Kuala Lumpur Racquet Club (KLRC) sactioned pair, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari also booked their ticket to the quarter-finals after they defeated Ricky Karanda Suwardi and Muhammad Ulinnuha of Indonesia; 21-19 and 21-15.

World number two men's doubles, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong however failed to book their place in the next round after they were shocked by unseeded pairs, Maneepong Jongjit and Nipitphon Puangpuapech of Thailand; 17-21 and 18-21.

In the mixed doubles category, two national pairs crashed out from the tournament after both of them were defeated by their respective opponents.

World number three pair, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying were shocked by unseeded pair, Fran Kurniawan and Shendy Puspa Irawati of Indonesia; 15-21 and 17-21.

Another pair, Ong Jian Guo and Lim Yin Loo also lost to sixth seed, Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand; 14-21 and 13-21.

The nation's sole survivor in the women's doubles category, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun and Woon Khe Wei will play against fourth seed, Eom Hye Won and Jang Ye Na of South Korea in the second round match, later today.

Malaysia have no representative in the women's singles when all the players were beaten in the qualifying round.
