Chong Wei books a spot in Malaysian Open semis

World number one shuttler Lee Chong Wei and two other national players continued their impressive performance in the 2013 Malaysian Badminton Open at the Putra Stadium as they booked a semi-final berth in the tournament.

In the quarter-final match held earlier today, Chong Wei brushed aside fifth seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong, after he registered an easy win of 21-12 and 21-9 in just 24 minute.

The 30-year old shuttler, who is aiming for his ninth Malaysian Open title, is scheduled to take on sixth seed, Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in the semi-final clash.

The Danish player, currently ranked 15th in the world ranking, had earlier defeated another national shuttler Liew Daren 19-21, 21-13 and 21-17 in a gruelling match which lasted 62 minute.

National men's doubles pair, Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah who did not play yesterday also cruised into the quarter-finals of the US$400,000 (RM1.21 million) tournament after they defeated Kang Ji Wook and Lee Sang Joon of South Korea with a 21-14 and 21-16 win.

Goh and Lim however had an uphill task as they will play against another South Korean pair, Ko Sung Hyun and Lee Yong Dae, in the semi-final match tomorrow.

The sixth seed pair marched after they pulled up an upset against fourth seed, Hirokatsu Hashimoto/Noriyasu Hirata of Japan; 21-14 and 21-7 in another quarter-final match.

Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying also put up a good display as they recorded an easy win by beating their compatriots, Tan Aik Quan and Lai Pei Jing; 21-13 and 21-14 in 31 minutes.

Chan and Goh will set a date against fourth seed, Robert Mateusiak/Nadiezda Zieba of Poland after the pair defeated seventh seed, Danny Bawa Chrisnanta/Vanessa Neo Yu Yan of Singapore; 21-11 and 21-12.

The semi-final matches will start at 2pm tomorrow.
