National badminton champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei is optimistic that the national contingent can clinch Malaysia's elusive Olympic gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Chong Wei said the success of the national contingent at the Rio Olympics proved all athletes were capable of winning medals and the gold medal prospect need not be him.
"I hope the success of the national contingent can raise the spirit of our national junior athletes to be more competitive like Pandelela Rinong and other divers.
"I really felt dismayed that after trying three times, I am still winning the silver medal. This is the last Olympics (for me)...it has not crossed my mind whether to compete in the Tokyo Olympics or not," he told a media conference at the Bunga Raya Complex, KLIA here Wednesday.
He said that he will also be discussing with Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) acting president Tan Sri Mohamed Al-Amin Abdul Majid on going down to the states to promote badminton among the young.
Chong Wei won three consecutive Olympic silver medals starting from 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London and this year in Brazil.
He added that he also hoped young players like Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin would excel in the international arena from now.
