Former World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei fought his way into the French Open Super Series quarterfinals after beating 2010 World Junior champion Viktor Axelsen from Denmark 12-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris, Thursday.
It was Chong Wei's first Super Series quarterfinal since coming back from an eight-month suspension in May due to a doping offence.
Chong Wei who had to come back from a set down, will face Japan's Sho Sasaki who had beaten his countryman Kento Momota 15-21, 21-19, 21-19.
Following in Chong Wei's footsteps were veteran men's doubles pair Koo Kien Keat/Tan Bon Heong who beat England's Andrew Ellis/Peter Mills 21-16, 21-17.
The duo will face Japan's Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa.
However, the country's top men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong failed to advance further after losing to South Korea's Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang 11-21, 18-21.
In the women's competition, Tee Jing Yi hardly lost any sweat in her victory when seventh seed Sung Ji Hyun from South Korea conceded a walkover while trailing 2-4 in the first set due to injury.
Jing Yi will face Indonesia's Maria Febe Kusumastuti in the second round.
