Former World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei will have to play in all Super Series tournaments to regain his status as the world number one, said Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost Hansen.
Currently, Chong Wei's ranking dropped to 30th spot in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) men's singles world ranking after he was banned after testing positive for a banned substance, dexamethasone, during the World Championships in Copenhagen, last August.
"Chong Wei will have to compete in all Super Series events and we (BAM) are actually appealing to see whether we can get his name into the Australia Open (May 26-31).
"The dateline is over but we can get him into the tournament. If we did not manage to get him to play in the Indonesian Open (June 2-7) or Australia Open, we are considering the US Open (June 16-21)," he told reporters at the BAM Office in Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara, here, today.
Frost said Chong Wei have to rush for ranking points and BAM have to start pushing him up to make sure he would be on top again.
Chong Wei will head the national challenge in the Sudirman Cup that is scheduled from May 10 to 17 and 2015 SEA Games in Singapore in June.
He received an eight-month backdated suspension for an anti-doping regulation violation, starting from Aug 30 and enabling to resume his badminton career from May 1.
According to a BWF statement yesterday, the sanction, imposed by the BWF Doping Hearing Panel, had resulted from an Adverse Analytical Finding of Chong Wei's sample taken at the BWF World Championships the same day in Denmark.
