Cycling must remain in Olympics, says MNCF

That was the immediate reaction of Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad when told of suggestions that cycling should be removed from the Olympics.

After Lance Armstrong’s confession of using banned substances during in an exclusive interview with talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Dick Pound criticised the International Cycling Union (UCI) on handling doping cases before suggesting for the removal of the sport from the Olympics.

“We need to look at this in detailed. Where did the mistake originated from? Who is responsible? A proposal should get a well-rounded perspective before it is implemented," said Naim.

“I don’t see the connection between Lance Armstrong’s mistake and the removal of UCI from the Olympics. That’s not possible. What’s the intention of easily removing the sport?” he questioned.

Naim adds, MNCF, Asian Cycling Confederation and UCI constantly ensure that the sport and the riders are free from prohibited substances.

“Every athlete has a biological record which we can trace at any time. Our officers are able to check our cyclists at any time,” explained Naim.
