The fifth stage of the Dakar Rally will see the first border crossing of the race on Wednesday.

After winding through the dunes of Southern Peru, the fifth stage will see the race move from Arequipa in southern Peru to Arica in the far north of Chile.

The fifth stage of the Dakar Rally features two distinct courses, with motorcycles and quad bikes taking one route and trucks and cars another.

According to Chilean website Ilovechile.cl, the bike course moves immediately into the special stage, while the heavier vehicles have their special stage later in the course.

There are two sections of the race to be held in Chile. The race will cross the Andes to Salta in Argentina before returning to Santiago.

By the end of the fifth stage, each competitor will have already covered over 2,000 kilometers.
