Everton striker Oumar Niasse has been arrested on suspicion of assault, it was announced on Saturday.
Police were called to a property in Salford, Greater Manchester, just over 30 miles from north-west Premier League club Everton's Liverpool base, at 00:55 local time Friday (2355 GMT Thursday) following a report of assault.
A 26-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning and has been bailed pending further enquiries, Greater Manchester Police said.
An Everton spokesperson told the BBC that the Merseyside club "condemns unreservedly any form of abuse".
"In this case, we understand an investigation is under way to establish the facts," the spokesperson added.
Senegal winger Niasse joined Everton on February 1, for a fee of around 13.5 million pounds (17.1 million euros, US$19.4 million) on a four-and-a-half year deal and has since made seven appearances for the Toffees.
