For anyone who stumbles unexpectedly upon a stream with a promising trout population, the rod-less Pocket Reel makes fishing on a whim entirely possible.
The floatable fishing kit includes everything necessary: 45 feet of 12lb line, 45 feet of big game line, four hooks and sinkers, 10 synthetic maggots, one three-quarter inch-bobber, two spinner lures, and a knot guide with directions. An upgraded version includes a Crappie/Panfish jig.
A lanyard and bead attached to the cap enable casting, and the product promotional video shows a child casting the product with ease.
Reeling is done manually, by winding the line around the plastic canister, which weighs just 3.25 ounces, and the product claims to be virtually indestructible to enable big catches.
Traditionally, long rods, cumbersome gear boxes and the need for bait necessitate extensive planning for a day of fishing, and hikers are rarely willing to carry the equipment in the off-chance they may stumble upon a likely source.
Fishing enthusiast and outdoorsman Josh Perlmutter conceived the idea because he wasn't interested in buying expensive, lightweight products available to those looking for an ultra-portable solution.
Perlmutter says he tested several jury-rigged fishing kits, including using film canisters and prescription pill bottles, which he credits as his starting point in creating Pocket Reel.
On Friday the Kickstarter campaign had raised more than 900 percent of its funding goal with 15 days to go.
The kit can be pre-ordered by contributing a minimum of $15 to the Kickstarter campaign. An extra $10 is required for international shipping.
Delivery is expected in August.
