The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) plans to hold an engagement session with the cycling community and the authorities to get their views on how cycling activities, which are fast gaining popularity among Malaysians, can be carried out safely.
"This way (engagement session), we can find a more complete solution so that there won't be any constraints to cycling activities and, at the same time, won't endanger the lives of other road users,” its Minister, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, said after launching the ISN Inspire Programme at the National Sports Institute yesterday.
A newspaper had previously reported that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) was studying the possibility of ensuring all bicycles were registered, licensed and provided with registration number plates, just like other motorised vehicles, for the safety of the cyclists.
Reezal Merican said the suggestion by national track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang for a separate track to be built as a safety measure for cyclists would be discussed.
Meanwhile, Reezal Merican also welcomed Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin's intention to contest a post in the Negeri Sembilan Cycling Association (NSCA) at their annual general meeting.
