Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin is disappointed with the action of several Malaysian fans who attacked Vietnam supporters at the Shah Alam Stadium soon after the national team lost 1-2 to Vietnam during the first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-finals match, last night.
He said what disappointed him last night was not the match by the action of these fans which did not reflect the Malaysian culture.
“There is no reason for such violent act. Especially towards the visitors in our country. Is this how we treat our guests? It does not matter if they are here on a visit or working here, this is not Malaysian culture,” said Khairy on his latest Facebook posting.
Khairy characterized the incident as an irresponsible act and a provocation to the Vietnam supporters when the Harimau Malaya team arrives in Hanoi for the second leg of the match.
“These irresponsible individuals have not thought about our fans who will be travelling to Hanaoi, Vietnam for the second-leg. Can’t this action be seen as a provocation and invites security risks towards the Malaysian supporters in Hanoi later?
Khairy also apologised to Vietnam supporters who were attacked at the Shah Alam Stadium.
“These violent fans do not represent Malaysia. My sincere apologies on behalf of Malaysia for the actions of these irresponsible thugs,” he added.
Khairy hoped that the match in Hanoi will be done in good sportsmanship on the field and among the audience.
During the match, Malaysia lead 1-0 as early as the 14th minute through a goal by Mohd. Safiq Rahim before Vietnam equalized 1-1 before the end of the first half through the goal by Huy Vo Toan. Another goal by Nguyen Van Quyet in the 60th minute provided a comfortable victory to the visitors.
Malaysia will travel to Hanoi on Thursday.
