KHAIRY: I am confident the police and FAM will tighten security after this.
The youth and sports minister is optimistic there will be no blemish in the second final action of the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup between Malaysia and Thailand at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Dec 20.
This is because all would have learnt a lesson from the Dec 7 incident which occurred at the Shah Alam Stadium, notes Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said the irresponsible action of a few (football fans) during the first semi-final match during the Malaysia-Vietnam match at the Shah Alam Stadium had blighted Malaysia's image at international level.
"I am confident the police and FAM (Football Association of Malaysia) will tighten security after this. If the supporters see others acting in a violent manner, calm them down. Everyone has to play their role," he said.
Khairy said this to reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry, UEM Group Berhad and Nilai Springs Resort Sdn Bhd for an industrial training programme for trainees of the National Youth Skills Institute here today.
Malaysia qualified for the final of the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup in defeating Vietnam with an aggregate win of 5-4 after the second semi-final action in Hanoi on Thursday.
The first final match of the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup will take place at the Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Khairy has suggested the police conduct a security check outside the fences of the Bukit Jalil National Stadium at the second final action of the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup.
He said, based on his observation, during the final match of the Malaysia Cup at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in October, the security check was done inside the fences of the stadium.
He said inspection inside the fences of the stadium resulted in supporters bringing in fireworks and flares into the stadium.
