Finally after four days of at first dominant and then staving off a surge of serious rivalry from a traditional nemesis, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (KL) earlier today clearly emerged as the champion of rhythmic gymnastics in the country.
KL became the overall champion of the MSSM Rhythmic Gymnastics 2013 Championship despite a late surge by archrival Selangor who dominated in the Senior category with five gold medals out of their six in total coming from there.
KL strength in depth in the younger two of the three age categories on competition saw them bagging 13 gold medals with the most medals coming from the Junior and Pre-junior categories.
Izzah Amzan in the Junior category and Amisha Sofia Azli in the Pre-junior category had given KL strong gold medal haul from their golden performances from day 1 to day 3 of the championship.
However on the last day of the four day championship today (Thursday), resurgent Selangor girls tried their best to wrestle the remaining gold medals in the group exercise competition for all the three age group categories.
However the strong performances of KL gymnasts in the individual competition was continued into the group competition and KL edged out a strong Selangor fight back for both Pre-Junior and Junior group exercise gold medal.
For example the difference in points was just 0.1 for today’s Junior category group exercise with clubs final competition. While for the Pre-junior group exercise with rope final competition it was 0.15.
As the curtains closes on the MSSM Rhythmic Gymnastics 2013 Championship, KL’s bright showing in their own backyard in Bukit Jalil shines rays of hope for the nation’s gold medal aspirations in the Olympics of the future starting with the Youth Olympic Games 2014 in Nanjing China.
