World number two Laura Massaro of England created her own history after putting up an impressive performance to emerge victorious and claim her maiden world title at the CIMB Women’s World Championship, here on Sunday.
The 31-year-old Laura had to face a tough battle before edging giant-killer Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in the final at the Subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre (SPICE), here on Sunday.
Laura started off brilliantly, winning the first game 11-7 but the unseeded Nour who had dashed the hopes of world number one Datuk Nicol David on Saturday, made it 1-1 by taking the second game 11-6.
However, Laura, digging deep into her reserves and experience, restored the advantage by winning the third game 11-9 but unexpectedly lost the fourth 5-11 before sealing the victory with a 11-9 score in the deciding game.
