KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton legend, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, will donate 50 special tablets for the use of underprivileged students in the Bukit Mertajam parliamentary constituency.
This was informed Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukit Mertajam, Steven Sim Chee Keong, in a post on his Facebook page today.
According to him, the wish was voiced by Chong Wei through a phone call on Thursday, immediately after he found out about the ‘Asal Cek Mau Pi Sekolah’ (As Long As I Want To Go To School) program conducted by the MP.
“Our hero came to the rescue! Yesterday, Chong Wei called me after finding out about the ‘Asal Cek Mau Pi Sekolah’ program. We had a chance to talk about our families, health and national sports.
“Good news from our beloved hero: Chong Wei will sponsor 50 Samsung Tab A8 tablets for the ‘Asal Cek Mau Pi Sekolah’ program!
"Thank you very much. You are indeed a hero inside and outside the court. Kam siah (thank you)!" Steven wrote.
It is understood that the tablets will be handed over to underprivileged families for online learning.
The ‘Asal Cek Mau Pi Sekolah’ program was launched on January 24 to help students from low-income families in the Bukit Mertajam parliamentary constituency.
The program offers assistance such as free homework photocopying services, internet data top-up, free online guidance classes, Bukit Mertajam MP adoption program and free laptops.
