Malaysia bags its 1,000th gold medal
Malaysia bagged its 1,000th gold medal in Myanmar, Monday, when Wushu exponent Phoon Eyin scored 9.67 points out of 10 in the Qiangshu event.
The 17-year-old Eyin, who was making her Sea Games debut, said she was very happy to have brought Malaysia the 1,000th gold medal.
The Negeri Sembilan-born said she was ‘totally overwhelmed by the occasion and had no words to describe her happiness’.
It is Malaysia's 1,000th gold after 54 years of Sea Games participation.
Vietnam's Duong Vi took silver with 9.59 while Thalia Lovita of Indonesia took the bronze with 9.40 at the Wunna Theidki A Indoor Stadium.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported National wushu coach Yoong Thong Foong said he too was pleasantly surprised by Phoo's outstanding performance and added that she is a talented and dedicated student.
Overall, wushu picked up one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The silver medal was contributed by Ho Mun Hua from the men's Nando after collecting 9.68 points while Diana Bong Siong Lin (women's Nangun) and Ng Say Yoke (men's Daoshu) brought in the bronze medals.
