Maybank Malaysian Open Golf: Westwood Wins
LEE Westwood bounced back from his US Masters disappointment by winning the Maybank Malaysian Open golf tournament on Sunday. He carded a 4-under par 68 for an 18-under 4-day total of 270, 7 shots clear of a trio of players led by Bernd Wiesberger of Austria, Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium. Another trio of players (D Willet of England, R Karlberg of Sweden and J Quesne of France were a shot behind while Pablo Larrazabal of Spain and Thomas Pieters of Belgium finished 9-under.
This is the second time Westwood has won in Malaysia – he won back in 1997 before the tournament became co-sanctioned with the European and Asian Tour.
Westwood finished seventh in the US Masters last weekend, enduring a a 64th major championship without a win. Westwood led with an opening round of 65; carded a 66 on Friday, had his led cut to 1 when he finished Round 3 with a 71. He bounced back in the storm-delayed final round to score a 68 to seal his 13th victory in Asia; the 36th of his career.
The 2014 Maybank Malaysia Open Golf Championship, played at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club carried a prize money of RM9.137 million (US$2.75 million).
