Mohd Fazri Subri’s success at FIFA Football Awards is viewed as the much-needed boost to the drop in performance of Malaysian football.
Former president of Kelantan Football Association (KAFA), Tan Sri Annuar Musa hoped Mohd Faiz’s success will inject renewed spirits to other local football players.
“His success has brought glory to the country and serves as ‘panadol’ to elevate the level of our national football team,” said Annuar at a media conference here today.
“His success is hoped to inspire other professional players,” he added.
“This is proof that nothing is impossible and achievable not only by Faiz. Other football players must act professionally and do their best, and not only question about higher salary,” said Annuar.
He also said that Mohd Faiz’s feat must be celebrated by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and other associations and serves as a lesson to elevate the level of our national accomplishments,” he added.
The Penang midfielder received the 2016 Puskas Award for Best Goal Of The Year at FIFA Football Awards ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland, early Tuesday (Malaysian time).
The wonder goal by Mohd Faiz,29, received 59.46 percent of the votes.
He beat two other contenders, Johnath Marlone Azevedo da Silva of Brazil (22.86 per cent) and female player, Daniuska Rodriguez of Venezuela (10.01 per cent).
Mohd Faiz scored the 'physics defying goal' via a free kick to help Penang beat Pahang 4-1 in a Super League match on Feb 16, 2016.
The Puskas Award was named after football legend Ferenc Puskas of Hungary who enjoyed great success with Spanish giants Real Madrid in the 1950s and 60s.
