Muay Thai athlete Mohd Lokman Akimi Mat Roji created a record after becoming the first Malaysian athlete to win a gold medal in the event at the SEA Games in Myanmar.
In the final action at the Wunna Theikdi Indoor Boxing Stadium here Saturday, the 24-year-old policeman beat Vietnamese athlete Nguyen Ngo Trieu Nhat 3-0 in the 51kg category.
The Pasir Mas-born athlete, when met by reporters, said he did not expect to win a gold medal and regarded it as his best gift for wife, Noraini Che Harun, who is due to deliver their first baby in March, next year.
"I am thankful at getting the gold medal for the national contingent. I also wish to thank the Malaysian Muai Thai Association, National Sports Council and my employers the Royal Malaysia Police," said Mohd Lokman Akimi on a happy note.
Commenting on the competition, he admitted his challenger gave him a tough fight but he was able to win, thanks to his instructor's words of advice.
At the same time, Mohd Lokman Akimi also hoped the younger generation especially in Kelantan could continue their struggle in the sport as Kelantan organised many Muay Thai championships.
"I also hope to improve my performance to face future championships," said Mohd Lokman Akimi, who started practicing Muay Thai in 2007.
