The first round of the National Badminton Championships draw Wednesday witnessed some interesting matches, including the men's singles and doubles.
In men's singles category, several mainstays including Liew Daren, Zulfadli Zulkiffli and Lim Chi Wing qualified for the second round today, as expected.
Misbun Ramdan Misbun and Yogendaran Krishnan from Selangor also qualified for the next round.
Misbun Ramdan is scheduled to meet Yogendran today after qualifying without contest as opponent Tan Jia Wei of BAM withdrew, while Yogendran advanced after beating 2013 Asian Junior champion Soo Teck Zhi 21-16, 16-21, 23-21.
In men's doubles category, national junior pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohamed Rumsani, who are also the top seeds, qualified for the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Although they had just returned from the Asian Mixed Team Championships in Vietnam earlier this month, Goh and Nur Izzuddin showed no sign of fatigue as they brushed aside Muhammad Amzzar Zainuddin-Ooi Zi Heng, 21-18, 21-19.
However, luck was not with doubles pair Mohd Razif Ab Latif (Negeri Sembilan)-Muhammad Hafiz Hashim (Kelantan) after losing straight sets to Muhammad Fariqzuan Fauzi-Muhammad Hafizi Hashim (Kelantan) 21-18, 22-20.
Meanwhile, siblings Misbun Ramdan Misbun-Misbun Shawal Misbun (Selangor) lost in the first round of the draw to third seeds Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen (BAM) 21-14, 21-6. -- Bernama
