National shuttler Jing Yi makes it to semis

National shuttler Tee Jing Yi gave the Malaysian contingent much to cheer when she qualified for the semifinals in the women's singles at the Emirates Arena here Friday.

In Friday's quarter finals, Jing Yi received a tough fight from P C Thulasi of India, going down 18-21 in the first set but rose up to win the next two in 21-19 and 21-19 in a match that lasted 73 minutes.

She will meet Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in the last four (match will be played at 4pm, today - Malaysian time).

Gilmour brushed aside Michelle Chan of New Zealand 21-9 and 21-10 to book her semifinal ticket.

"I am very happy to make it to the semis. I made many mistakes in the first set but I fought with all I had in the second and rubber to win.

"On learning our men's singles did not get past the quarterfinals I was very determined to win because I was the only one left (in the singles events)," said Jing Yi, who is making her Commonwealth Games debut.

Joining Jing Yi in the semifinals are the Malaysian men's doubles pair of Tan Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem, mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing and women's dobles pair Lim Yin Loo-Lai Pei Jing.

In the quarterfinals, Tan/Goh defeated Ross Smith and Robbin Middleton of Australia 21-17 and 21-19 while Chan/Lai overcame Danny Chrisnanta and Vaneesa Neo of Singapore 21-18, 17-21 dan 21-19.

Chan/Lai will be meeting Chris Langridge-Heather Olver of England in the semis tomorrow.

Lim/Lai booked their semifinals ticket after defeating Shinta Mulia Sari-Lei Yao of Singapore in 19-21, 22-20 and 21-19 and will be taking on India's Jwalla Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa.

Tan/Goh will have to overcome English pair Andrew Ellis and Chris Adcock inorder to make the final.
