The National Sports Day celebration, which is scheduled for Oct 10 nationwide, will be cancelled if the Air Pollutant Index (API) level reaches 150.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamuluddin Abu Bakar said the cancellation. however, won't affect the whole country, only the areas which record an API of 150.
"Since the API readings vary between regions, the National Sports Institute of Malaysia (ISN) has prepared a guideline. The ministry will duly advise all participants on this.
"If the API reaches 150, we certainly recommend to cancel the Sports Day event.
"I just hope everything is going to be okay and the haze will clear up. We hope for good weather on Oct 10," said Khairy after attending the #FitUM this morning at Dewan Tuanku Canselor, University of Malaya here.
An API reading of 0 to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100 is moderate; 101 to 200 is unhealthy; 201 to 300 is very unhealthy and 300 and above, hazardous.
The public can obtain API updates through the Department of Environment website at apims.doe.gov.my.
