No Malaysians in list of dope cheats at 2008 Beijing Olympics - Beng Choo

No Malaysians were in a group of 31 athletes from 12 countries who had undergone a doping test conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recently.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), honorary secretary Datuk Low Beng Choo said the 31 athletes who had tested positive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics had undergone a doping test to determine if they had used the banned substances again.

"From what we know, there are no Malaysians involved in the test carried out randomly on athletes who raise suspicion or come from countries that are known for drug abuse in sports.

"The main objective is to send a message to athletes and officials to stay away from drugs," she said.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had blacklisted 31 athletes from 12 countries who are involved in six sports and WADA had tested 454 samples from the Beijing Olympics, using the latest technology.

"If the test is positive, they will be suspended, pending a hearing... The procedure is normal and the athletes must be given a chance for a hearing," said Beng Choo.

She said results of tests carried out on 250 samples from the 2012 London Olympics would also be released soon.
