High riding Pahang scored a convincing 3-1 victory over Sarawak in their first leg Malaysia Cup semifinal at the Darul Makmur Stadium tonight.
The two goal advantage is expected to give Pahang a major boost when both teams face off in the second leg in Kuching, Sarawak next Saturday.
Pahang who have been in splendid form lately, took the lead through Azammuddin Akil after a brilliant run by R. Gopinathan in the 28th minute, to give the 33,000 fans who packed the stadium, enough reason to cheer.
Even before the cheers had died down, the Sarawak goal was once again rocked by Azammuddin who headed in a superb cross by Jalalludin Jaafar in the 31st minute.
Even before the first half, Pahang were three goals ahead when Matias Ruben Conti punished Sarawak goalkeeper Sani Anuar Kamsani for coming off his line in the 37th minute.
Sarawak who have been the most improved team in the league, fought back strongly and managed to reduce the deficit in the 39th minute through Mohd Shahrol Saperi.
With all the goals coming in the first half, the fans had nothing to cheer in the second half although Pahang and Sarawak had several goal scoring chances.
