National track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang who claimed Malaysia's first-ever gold medal at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track World Championships in the men's keirin event in Hong Kong, is set to be rewarded by the Terengganu state government.
The 29-year-old Terengganu-born cyclist whose best ever performance was a silver medal feat in the UCI World Cycling Championships over a 10-year participation, surged to the gold unchallenged against a field that comprised bigger and better opponents.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman made the announcement when hosting a lunch reception for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the Dungun District Rest House, here today.
"We are also proud of the Dungun-born cyclist's ability to win the first gold medal of his career in a world championships. The state government will also arrange a grand welcome for Azizulhasni in Kuala Terengganu on Wednesday," he said.
During the lunch reception, the Prime Minister spent some time with Azizulhasni's father Awang Muda Embong, 68, who was also invited for the lunch reception.
"I was pleasantly surprised and shocked to be invited for a lunch reception with the Menteri Besar and Prime Minister. This is a historic moment for me and I wish the Prime Minister's 'congratulatory message' would serve as an inspiration to Azizulhasni.
"I have always prayed for my son's success in the world stage," said the father of nine children.
Meanwhile, Najib congratulated Awang for his sacrifices and support to Azizulhasni.
