National hockey Paul Revington is pleased with the attitude of his lads as the national team gear up for the Azlan Shah Cup scheduled March 9 to 17 in Ipoh.
The national team are set to play New Zealand in Malacca on March 4 and 5 ahead of the international tournament.
“We’ve played a series of matches against Ireland and now we’re going to play New Zealand so we’re pretty prepared. The players are in good form,” said Revington on Astro Awani’s Sukan Ekstra aired on Saturday.
“In Doha (Champions Trophy), we managed good results against Pakistan and India and we were pleased with how we started. We are hoping for the same in Ipoh.”
The national hockey lads won the hearts of the fans with their good performance in Doha, having managed a 3-3 draw against Pakistan before defeating India 5-3 in the group matches.
Pakistan went on to win the Champions Trophy with arch-rivals India playing second fiddle. Malaysia settled for the third spot.
Revington will now concentrate on tactics especially on penalty corners.
“We’ve got good penalty corner specialists. Once we get our fundamentals right in the next week or two we should be all set for the tournament.
“Ranking wise we’re somewhere at the bottom of the group but our objective is to put up a good performance. I know it’s a cliché saying we will look at one game at a time but that’s how it is.”
Revington now hopes to see the national team remain consistent when playing top teams as six nations namely South Korea, Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia are set to play in the 22nd edition of the Azlan Shah Cup.
“We’ve made some improvements and the Azlan Shah Cup will be a god indicator of where we stand,” he added.
