Malaysian Saiful “The Vampire” Merican’s love for martial arts knows no boundaries.
Whether it’s at home, in the office, at the gym, or even at the beach, the bantamweight mixed martial artist is passionate about spreading the benefits of the lifestyle through various platforms.
In fact, that motivated him to host the Merican Island Boot Camp — a unique three-day Muay Thai program on Terengganu’s most popular island, Redang Island.
The event, hosted by the ONE Championship star, offers the chance to practice Muay Thai all while enjoying the sunset by the beach.
“My wife and I had always thought about trying something different, and that’s how the idea came about,” Saiful recalled.
“I love Muay Thai, and I told myself why not organize something more fun, but with the same intensity. And the chance of doing it at one of the best island’s in my hometown sounded like the perfect idea.
“We’ve been doing it for three years, and every time it ends, I’m already looking forward to the next one.”
In the 30-year-old Terengganu native’s journey, the word ‘stop’ does not exist.
Despite recuperating from an injury he picked up in his last bout, “The Vampire” has continued his role as a martial arts competitor and a teacher.
“The best way to spread what I’ve learned is by continuing to teach,” Saiful said.
“This boot camp program is different from what we do at the gym. The opportunity to train outdoors is a huge plus for the participants.
“We shadow box in the sea and learn self-defense on the sand. There are also games and competitions while working out.”
Saiful, who has been competing since he was 11 years old, said the camp’s ambition is to provide a fun, yet memorable getaway.
Besides Muay Thai, attendees will be able to immerse in the beauty of the sea through two snorkeling sessions and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the island through team-building activities.
“On top of that, participants can also get the chance to know about me and Muay Thai even more,” the veteran added.
The opportunity to share a three-day camp on an island with a martial artist who continuously displays strong values is indeed a rare treat.
