Terengganu's hopes of clinching both the men's and women's Olympic round recurve gold were dashed when Selangor pulled off a major upset to win the men's gold.
Archers from Terengganu had dominated the medal haul in the 18th SUKMA with five gold medals and came into the final as the favourite but Selangor trio Areiffuddinur Zakarian, Muhammad Idris Shah Shaharudin and Muhammad Ikram Zaidi had other ideas.
Both teams started on a cautious note at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) field in Kota Samarahan here and were tied 1-1 in the first set but Selangor moved ahead 4-2 in the second set and went on to win the third and fourth 6-2.
"We were a little nervous at the start, especially me as I was the third and final archer. However, all three of us were determined to win and help Selangor to maintain the overall lead in the medal tally," said Muhammad Ikram.
In the women's final, Terengganu made up for lost gold by beating Negeri Sembilan 5-4 through Nur Aliya Ghapar, Nur Aqilah Yusof and Nuramalia Haneesha Mazlan's efforts.
Terengganu have so far collected five gold, five silver and two bronze medals from archery and since gold medals will also be on offer tomorrow in the Compound team events, the tally may increase.
