Sepang International Circuit Sdn Bhd (SIC) is looking into hosting major cycling meets at the Sepang International Circuit.
Its chairman Datuk Mokhzani Tun Mahathir said the matter was still at the discussion stage.
"We will try to hold one or two events a year at the circuit...I believe if the SIC is to be used for cycling events, fans would want them to be on the level of Formula 1.
"As is often the case, motoring fans who come want to see big names like Valentino Rossi but I believe if cyclists are given the chance to race here, it will raise their spirits to a new level because here is where the big ones are held," he told Bernama when met on the sidelines of the inaugural Sapura Kencana-SIC Criterium Series.
Mokhzani also said SIC's management had to also consider its packed schedule before hosting cycling races and that year end would be most suitable as it was a "leaner time" for motor races (in Malaysia).
The one-day Sapura Kencana-SIC Criterium Series was held at the SIC site but not at the track itself.
It involved six categories; Men's Elite (19 years and above with UCI licence), Men's Open (19 years and above with MNCF licence), Men's Junior (below 18 years), Men's Veteran (40 years and above), Women's Open (19 years and above) and Women's Junior (below 18 years).
