Being the top players in the selection trial is not the final yardstick for the men's and women's singles badminton players to be included in the Sudirman Cup and the SEA Games squads.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost said that the success would be one of the benchmark to evaluate the players performances.

"I am not saying that if you win the trial, you will be selected. I am just saying that it is the part of the criteria.

"How they perform in the other tournaments and their fitness is also important. It is not just who wins the selection trial tomorrow (Thursday)," he told reporters at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara Wednesday night.

The BAM is conducting a two-day selection trial involving 14 men's singles and seven women's singles players, including three independent players.

The men's singles player who turned up for trial were Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, R. Satheishtharan, Cheam June Wei, Soo Teck Zhi, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub, Chong Yee Han, Lim Chi Wing, Tan Kian Meng, Soong Joo Ven and Mohammad Arif Abdul Latif and Tan Chun Seang (independent player).

Another independent player, Zulfadli Zulkifli opted out when he skipped the fitness test conducted by the National Sports Institute (NSI) in February.

"He did not take the fitness test and thus cannot be part of this trial," said Frost.

Goh Jin Wei, Lim Yin Fun, Lee Zii Yii, Ho Yen Mei, Tee Jing Yi, Lim Chiew Sien and S. Sannatasah (independent) came for the women's singles trial.

The selection trial which started on Wednesday saw 14 men's singles divided into four groups and each player would play three matches over the two days.

"It is really wonderful to see the players putting in good efforts. They fought extremely hard and were involved in very long matches," he added.

The Sudirman Cup tournament will take place from May 10-17 in Dongguan, China while the SEA Games will be held in Singapore from June 5 to 16.
