National mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying once again came to the rescue by clinching the winning point as Malaysia beat India 3-2 in a Group 1D Sudirman Cup match in Dongguan, China, Monday.
The win ensured Malaysia the top spot in Group 1D and a ticket to the quarterfinals since the pair had also secured the winning point in their 3-2 victory over South Korea Sunday night.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying beat Sikki Reddy N/Arun Vishnu 21-14, 21-18 in the fifth and final match of the day when Malaysia and India were locked at 2-2 after the men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles.
Men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong gave Malaysia a flying start by beating Manu Attri/Sumeeth Reddy 21-15, 21-16 but India's world number two Saina Nehwal cancelled the advantage and levelled the tie with a 24-22, 21-13 win over Tee Jing Yi in the women's singles.
Former World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei later came on court to make it 2-1 by beating K. Srikanth 21-16, 21-15 to restore the lead but India came back strongly in the women's doubles to once again level the tie at 2-2.
Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa overcame Vivian Kah Mun Hoo/Woon Khe Wei 21-18, 19-21, 21-15 in three sets to force the outcome to be decided by the mixed doubles competition.
In other level one matches played today, Taiwan beat Russia 4-1 in a Group 1B match and Germany upset Thailand 3-2 in a Group 1A match.
Meanwhile, Indonesia edged England 3-2 in a Group 1C match played at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Jing Yi said she was a little disappointed with her loss to Saina but admitted the Indian player was more experienced.
"Before entering the court, I told myself to just do my best and try all the best in the game because I believe I can fight and give pressure to my opponent but she used all her experience in the second game with her deceiving serves," she said.
