Teenage superbiker Muhammad Izzat succumbs to injuries

Teenage superbike rider Muhammad Izzat Mohd Abdul Hakim, 17, who was involved in the tragedy that killed a safety marshal at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) last weekend, passed away Wednesday at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).

Sepang police chief Supt Imran Abdul Rahman said Muhammad Izzat who suffered serious injuries last Saturday, died at 1pm Wednesday.

During the incident on Saturday, Muhammad Izzat crashed into race marshal Satish Suppiah at about 12.30pm during a practice session.

Satish had died on the spot while Izzat was admitted to the HKL for treatment.

He participated in the SIC Ninja Cup programme this year and had been racing competitively since 2006.

Meanwhile, in expressing condolences, SIC in a statement said that the demise of Muhammad Izzat as a great loss to the sports as the youngsters had shown huge potential in becoming a great rider in the future.

"SIC shares our saddest news with the passing away of SIC Ninja Cup rider, Muhammad Izzat.

"SIC is assisting with funeral arrangements including arranging for air transfer to his hometown Kuala Terengganu where the 17-year old would be laid to rest later today," said SIC.

This is the second incident to occur at SIC after MotoGP racer Marco Simoncelli, 24, was killed in a crash during the Malaysian Grand Prix on Oct 23, 2011.
