English Premier League (EPL) outfit, Tottenham Hotspur FC kicked off their pre-season tour ahead of the EPL new season with a slim 2-1 win against a Malaysian Selection which was beefed up by four foreign players at the Shah Alam Stadium, here, tonight.
The Malaysian side coached by national head coach, Dollah Salleh went into early attack but the North London club's defence marshalled by England's internationals, Danny Rose and Belgian Jan Vertonghen, managed to thwart the dangerous attempts by the home side.
Luck was with the visitors dubbed 'The Lilywhite' squad who broke the deadlock after England U-21 striker, Harry Kane tapped in a rebound from national goalkeeper, Khairul Fahmi Che Mat courtesy of Thomas Carroll's powerful shot in the 18th minute.
Four minutes later, Terengganu import player, Paulo Rangel scored the equaliser for the Malaysian Selection but it was not counted by referee, Mohd Amirul Izwan Yaacob after the Brazilian was caught in the off-side position.
Another Brazilian, Thiago Juninho who plays for Perak, finally headed home the equaliser in the 31st minute after a free kick from seasoned player, Indra Putra Mahayuddin, to give rapturous joy to the thousands of Malaysian fans who came to watch the game.
Boosted by the goal, the Malaysian Selection continued their ferocious attacks and Maldives skipper, Ali Ashfaq who plays for Super League side Police, almost doubled the lead but his shot in the 41st minute went wide despite only facing Spurs keeper, Frenchman Hugo Lloris.
Kane was on target again as he blasted the second goal in the 42nd minute to put Spurs 2-1 ahead and the result remained until the end of first half.
On resumption, Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino made five changes in his starting line-up to bolster the team but poor finishing by their strike force saw them fail to add another goal.
Rangel almost scored again but his free kick in the 80th minute was parried away by Spurs substitute goalkeeper, Michel Vorm.
Tottenham Hotspur FC who arrived in Malaysia on Tuesday after their last EPL match against Everton FC on Sunday will fly to Australia tomorrow and they will play against A-League side, Sydney FC at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia on Saturday.
