KUALA LUMPUR: National women's backup track cyclist Nyo Ci Hui gave a splendid ride to claim gold in the women's junior scratch race at the Asian Track Cycling Championships today.
The 18-year-old Perakian beat eight other riders in the demanding 7.5 km race at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex Velodrome in New Delhi, India.
Japan's Mizuki Ikeda claimed silver while Sofiya Karimova of Uzbekistan took bronze in the 30-lap race.
"The whole team is happy with Nyo's achievement, as she had to juggle her time between training and sitting for the last SPM examination," team manager Mohd Saiful Abdul Jalil said when contacted.
Yong Ann Tung also had a podium finish in the women's junior sprint event, edging compatriot Azwa Nabila Abdullah in the bronze medal decider.
In the gold medal fight, South Korean Na Yunseo defeated teammate Kim Chaeyeon.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Hafiq Mohd Jafri added more joy to the national camp by successfully taking home the silver medal in the men's junior omnium after collecting 133 total points.
The gold was won by Kazakh rider Ilya Karabutov who scored 148 points while the bronze medal went to Vladislav Troman from Uzbekistan with 126 points.
In the showdown, Mohammad Hafiq excelled in three omnium races, namely scratch, tempo and elimination when he obtained a total of 114 points to top the riders' standings alongside Karabutov.
However, in the omnium final, the points race, he had to trail the pace of the energetic cycling of Karabutov and Troman who were seen dominating the race.
