Former World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei showed he still has not lost his hunger for titles after claiming his fifth title this year by beating China's Tian Houwei in the Hong Kong Open Super Series men's singles final, today.
In a closely fought battle, Chong Wei, now ranked sixth in the world, took 49 minutes to overcome the world number 10, 21-16, 21-15 at the Hong Kong Coliseum and clinch his fourth Hong Kong Open title.
Chong Wei who returned to the court in May after serving an eight-month suspension from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for a doping offence, had won the Hong Open in 2009, 2010 and 2013.
The win was the second in as many weeks for Chong Wei and also sweet revenge for the 33-year-old who had lost to Houwei at the Australia Open in 2013.
Chong Wei who beat world number one Chen Long en route to clinching the China Open Premier Super Series, had upon his return, won the United States and Canada Grand Prix in June and French Open Super Series last month.
In the women's singles final, Spain's world number one Carolina Marin had to go the distance to beat Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-17, 18-21, 22-20 in three sets that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.
The women's doubles and mixed doubles feature an all-Chinese after with top seeds Zhang Nan/Zaho Yunlei taking the mixed doubles title after beating Liu Cheng/Bao Yixin 21-17, 17-21, 21-17 while Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei took the women's doubles crown with relative ease after disposing Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang 21-16, 21-12.
In an exciting men's doubles final, South Korea's world number one and top seeded pair Lee Yong dae/Yoo Yeon seong edged Mathias Boe/Carsten Morgensen from Denmark 21-7, 18-21, 21-18 in three sets to clinch the title.
