UBON RATCHATHANI (Thailand): Gloom surrounding the wushu camp over the past two days was lifted when two exponents came home with a gold medal each on the second day of wushu competitions at the ASEAN University Games (AUG), here today.
Tan Cheong Wan clinched the first gold medal from the men's individual gunshu while Tammy Tan Hui Ling contributed the second gold through the women's individual jianshu at the Sunee Tower where wushu competitions are being held.
Cheong Wan put up an energetic performance to collect 9.65 points, beating Singaporean Ong Zi Meng (9.63pts) for the gold while Indonesia's Seraf Naro Siregar (9.60pts) took the bronze.
The women's jianshu was a closely fought affair with Tan and her Indonesian opponent fighting tooth and nail for the gold.
In the end, Tan collected 9.67 points to edge Nandhira Mauriskha by a close margin after the Indonesian managed 9.65 points while Singaporeans Loh Ying Ting and Le Yin Shuen were awarded bronze medals after both finished with 9.63 points.
Meanwhile, team manager Sharel Rizel Dzahari said the Ministry of Higher Education had set a three-gold target for wushu but the wushu camp had set a four-gold target.
"We in the wushu camp set a four-gold target and on the second day managed to win two. That is a very positive achievement thus far.
"We are optimistic about achieving the target because we managed to win four gold medals at the 2018 AUG in Myanmar. In Myanmar we also won seven silver and four bronze medals," he said.
