ANTHROPIC co-founder Jack Clark said policymakers have only a limited window to establish safeguards for artificial intelligence before the technology becomes too powerful and difficult to control.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC on Monday (September 14), Clark said AI capabilities are advancing rapidly and argued that governments should act while only a small number of companies have the resources to build the most advanced systems.
Anthropic has been among the most vocal AI developers calling for stronger oversight of the technology. Earlier this year, the company warned that increasingly capable AI systems could eventually improve themselves faster than society can manage the risks, and urged major AI labs to consider coordinated measures to slow development if necessary.
Clark said the current period presents a rare opportunity to put policies in place that could prevent accidents and ensure advanced AI remains under human control, before the technology becomes more widespread and harder to regulate.
