As Malaysia prepares to roll out a targeted RON95 subsidy scheme next year, experts are raising concerns about implementation challenges.

The implementation of the RON95 subsidy in 2025 is expected to provide savings of RM3.6 billion to government expenditure.

Non-citizens, the commercial sector, and smuggling activities make up around 40 pct of total petrol consumption, current data shows.

The main point here is the (targeted) subsidies should not burden the 85 pct of the population, says PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prices of RON97 and RON95 petrol will remain unchanged at RM3.47 and RM2.05 per litre respectively from Aug 15 to 21.

Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the downtrend is based on comparison during the 20 days before and after implementing targeted diesel subsidy.

MOF said the retail price of diesel in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan will also remain unchanged at RM2.15 per litre.
